Brief Report on JPO/IPR Training Course for IP Trainers (IPTR)

The JPO/IPR Training Course for IP Trainers (IPTR) was held at the Asia Pacific Industrial Property Center, JIPII, in Tokyo, Japan, from September 24 to October 2, 2024. An examiner of Patents and Designs from O/o CGPDTM participated in the training course.

The course aimed to enhance participants' knowledge of IP laws, treaties, and educational methods to promote IP awareness, train educators, and improve IP education. There were several sessions, including:

  • The session on "How to Develop Creativity," which explored strategies to inspire creativity by presenting challenges and encouraging innovative solutions.
  • The session on "Active Learning" focused on techniques like the Flip method, Think-Pair-Share, and simulation games to engage young people in IP education. These methods, including quizzes and collaborative problem-solving, can be integrated into awareness sessions to enhance understanding and develop a deeper connection with IP concepts.
  • The session, "Development of Education Materials and Training Methods for High Schools and Universities," focused on using active learning techniques and real-life case studies to develop IP education content. It emphasized creating a supportive environment for creativity, using tangible demonstrations, and encouraging hands-on activities like startup simulations to enhance students' understanding of IP's role in innovation and entrepreneurship.
  • The session "Country Report Presentations on IP Education" provided valuable insights into various IP education methods employed globally, with countries like Japan, Turkey, and the Philippines showcasing innovative approaches such as creative workshops, interactive teaching tools, and IP competitions.
    India's presentation on the National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM) was well-received by the participants, highlighting its success in reaching millions of students across various education levels.
  • The session "IP Education for High School Students" used active learning strategies, including a creative activity where students shaped cartoon characters to understand design and copyright rights.
  • The session "Preparation of Instructional Plans and Supplementary Materials" involved creative strategies for student engagement and deepening understanding were presented, such as starting sessions with interactive activities and incorporating relatable examples. The session concluded with a series of group presentations, showcasing ideas like quizzes, scavenger hunts, and interactive activities to assess and reinforce participants' understanding of IP concepts.

Way Forward:

The official found the meeting beneficial for exchanging global IP education methodologies, enhancing IP awareness and developing international collaboration. The official suggested for integrating more interactive learning techniques to make IP education more engaging and accessible.
