Today India is climbing towards an unprecedented era of innovation, entrepreneurship and technological advancement. Intellectual property has emerged as a strategic asset for fostering economic growth, enhancing global competitiveness, encouraging innovation and promoting sustainable development. It also plays a vital role in preserving and promoting our rich indigenous culture, heritage and Bharatiya knowledge, while creating opportunities for livelihoods and inclusive economic development. Every Geographical Indication as a community right, every invention, creative expression, distinctive brand and industrial design represents not only intellectual endeavour, but also a valuable contribution to nation-building.

The IPO remains committed to nurturing a transparent, efficient, inclusive and user-centric intellectual property ecosystem that inspires confidence among innovators and facilitates the effective protection of their intellectual creations. Our goal is to consistently upgrade our processes, enhance institutional capacity, and provide high-quality services while adhering to the highest standards of examination, efficiency, and accountability. Intellectual Property is the cornerstone of a strong knowledge economy and a powerful enabler of creativity, innovation and sustainable development. When ideas are nurtured with knowledge, protected through Intellectual Property Rights and transformed into meaningful solutions, they create lasting value for society and the nation. A strong IP ecosystem encourages creativity, innovation, collaboration, and problem-solving while supporting the development of solutions that contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Over the last 5 years, India’s IP ecosystem has witnessed a strong growth in IP filings with year-on-year growth of more than 15% across all IPs. This progress reflects the collective efforts of the entire IP ecosystem and the continued commitment of the Office towards transforming procedures, reducing pendency and delays, improving accessibility and ensuring quality, transparency and accountability at every stage. Building an IP-led nation begins with awareness and capacity building. Under the National Intellectual Property Awareness Mission (NIPAM), more than 10,000 awareness programmes have been conducted across various schools, colleges, institutions, universities in all 28 States and 8 Union Territories, reaching more than 33 lakh students and faculty members, with an almost 50:50 representation of male and female participants. The office has taken initiatives such as NIPAM PCT Awareness Series “Think Local, Protect Global” for awareness of International IP systems, Atal Bal Hindi Kavita to nurture young creativity and encourage early awareness of copyright and originality.

The Indian IP Office has, over the years, undertaken significant reforms including end-to-end digital transformation, simplified procedures, enhanced online services, virtual hearings, advance public search facilities and strengthened examination processes have made the IP system more accessible and responsive. By nurturing innovation, protecting intellectual creations and promoting responsible knowledge sharing, we can unlock the economic potential of ideas and build a resilient, inclusive and sustainable future.

As India moves towards the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047, the imperative of intellectual property in cultivating a knowledge-driven economy is more crucial than ever. A world-class IP ecosystem cannot be built in isolation. I, therefore, invite inventors, startups, MSMEs, research institutions, registered agents, educators, students and all stakeholders to participate actively in India’s intellectual property ecosystem. Your cooperation, adherence to prescribed procedures and constructive engagement will help us build a system that is responsive to the innovator, accountable to the public and worthy of the nation’s trust. Innovation attains its true potential when it is effectively protected, responsibly commercialized and transformed into solutions that benefit society.
